Green Is The New Black

Posted on January 20 2016

I'm sure by now you've heard the phrase "going green" or "a green company" by now. What exactly does that mean? For us, it means everything from the apparel we buy to the packaging we ship in - it's somehow, someway ethically sourced and environmentally friendly.

97% of our Onesies® are made out of 100% organic cotton. And if it's not made in the USA, it's Fair Trade and made in India. Again, what does all of this mean? Let us break it down for you:

What's the difference between organic cotton & conventional cotton?

Organic Cotton

Seed Preparation Natural untreated GMO free seeds.

Soil Preparation Healthy soil through crop rotation. Retains moisture in soil from increased organic matter.

Weed Control Healthy soil creates natural balance. Beneficial insects and trap crops used.

Harvesting Natural defoliation from freezing temperatures or through the use of water management.

Production Warp fibers stabilized using double plying or non-toxic cornstarch.

Whitening Safe peroxide is used.

Finishing Soft Scour in warm water with soda ash for a PH of 7.5-8.

Dyeing Low-impact fiber reactive or natural dyes with low metal and sulfur content.

Printing Low impact or natural pigments with no heavy metals.

 Conventional Cotton

Seed Preparation Typically treated with fungicides or insecticides. Possible GMOs.

Soil Preparation Synthetic fertilizers, loss of soil due to monocrop culture, intensive irrigation.

Weed Control Aerial spraying of insecticides and pesticides. 9 of the most commonly used pesticides are known cancer-causing agents.

Harvesting Defoliation induced with toxic chemicals.

Production Warp fibers stabilized using toxic waxes.

Whitening Chlorine bleaching creates toxic bi-products which are released into the environment.

Finishing Hot water, synthetic surfactants, additional chemicals (sometimes formaldehyde).

Dyeing High temperature with heavy metals and sulfur content.

Printing Heavy metals in pigments run off into waterways polluting streams.

What does Fair Trade mean?

  • No child labor. Period.
  • Fair wages.
  • Safe work environment.
  • 8 hour work days.
